Diamond Lapping Paste
In the field of superhard material machining, diamond lapping paste is an indispensable tool. It is a type of soft abrasive (also known as a loose abrasive) composed of diamond micron-sized powder and a paste-like binder. It is primarily used to polish hard and brittle materials to achieve high surface finish quality.
1. Definition and Working Principle
Diamond lapping paste consists of diamond micron powder as the main abrasive component, combined with a paste-like binder. The ultra-hard diamond particles provide exceptional hardness and wear resistance. During the lapping process, these diamond grains roll within the paste, generating both compressive and cutting actions on the workpiece surface. This creates numerous micro-indentations; subsequent abrasive grains shear off the raised edges of these indentations, continuously forming fine swarf that is removed from the surface. As a result, the workpiece becomes progressively smoother and flatter.
Meanwhile, the binder not only holds the diamond particles together in a convenient paste form but also offers excellent lubrication, ensuring uniform and stable polishing performance. Diamond lapping paste is typically applied using either automated lapping machines or manual techniques, and it is especially effective for polishing and lapping hard and brittle materials.
Practical Example:Consider a tungsten carbide part requiring surface finishing. Diamond lapping paste is first choice applied to the surface, followed by mechanical lapping. As the machine operates, the diamond grains abrade and smooth the carbide surface. The binder ensures even distribution and consistent contact of the abrasive grains, resulting in a high-quality, mirror-like finish within minutes—significantly improving both efficiency and surface quality.
2. Classification of Diamond Lapping Paste
(1) By Binder/Solvent Type:
Oil-based lapping paste: Formulated with oils, stearic acid, and other additives. It offers excellent wettability, strong cutting force, and generates minimal heat. Ideal for high-precision finishing of tungsten carbide components, precision instruments, gauges, cutting tools, and grinding tools.
Water-based lapping paste: Made from alcohols and auxiliary ingredients. It has low viscosity, facilitates easy swarf removal, delivers high machining efficiency, and exhibits minimal corrosion to metals. Suitable for harsh lapping environments and widely used for metals, printed circuit boards (PCBs), glass, ceramics, gemstones, and agate.
